![]() I know these topics can be a can of worms, but I'm maintaining several vehicles, most of which could be harmonised on 5w40.
Currently I'm using a 10w40 semi-synth (Mobil 2000) in the tourer as per the book figure, but I'd like to bulk buy oil to save on cost and storage - a decent high SAPS A3 5w40 synthetic, something like Mobil 3000 or Millers Trident. I'm wondering if there is any good reason not to also use this 5w40 in the KV6 as well? It seems to be the preferred grade now suggested for the 75 V6 by various oil suppliers. I know the KV6 doesn't *need* a fully synthetic with this cold viscosity, but if it does no harm, and simplifies servicing are there any other reasons not to go with it? Thanks |

![]() I've been using 5w40 fully synth in my 190 for a while now, had no problems as far as I can see in fact if anything it seems to reduce that slight rattle on start up.

![]() Millers Trident is a good oil. Used it in my 220SD diesel. Engine seemed to rev easier, and mpg was better.

![]() I've also been pondering this topic for my KV6 and consulted Shell Lubematch which stated 5w-40 fully synth Helix Ultra as the premium option and Helix HX7 as the standard option. The Xpart fluid chart also states 5W-40 for the KV6 engine.
From the other threads on this subject it seems that some people prefer 10w-40 as it is the oil originally stated in the Rover handbook, and also for reasons of cost ie why pay more for a higher spec than required? Although, shopping around, fully synthetic can generally be found at similar prices to semi synth. For example Triple QX fully synthetic is actually cheaper than their semi on the Eurocarparts site! If you already use fully synth for other vehicles so presumably buy in bulk and it benefits you cost wise I see no reason not to use it. Last edited by ScreamingLordStokes; 6th May 2023 at 09:46.. |

![]() In North America 5-40 was the recommended weight for the Freelander 1 with the KV6. I have been using Castrol Edge in my KV6s for several years now with no issues. (Edge may be a North America only name)

![]() Good to know, thanks guys.
It did seem logical, but I thought it was worth asking first! Quote:
Coincidently one of my other vehicles is a 220SDi, so this is interesting, again I think 15w40 mineral is the original spec -what viscosity are you using? |
