Change the filter as I said above - just because the housing hasn't separated, doesn't mean the filter itself isn't clogged.

Spluttering before it dies is indicative of low (rather than no) fuel pressure.

Have you checked that the pipes inside the fuel tank are not squashed (or even disconnected. As I posted earlier, that certainly gave me some grief on my previous car. Fault occurs easily if you lift the fuel filter or pump then place it back in position.
