Rusty rear suspension arms- Do I replace?
I am a bit concerned that big chunks of rust came off today, particularly on the offside rear,. The trailing lower arms are not much better. The amount of rust that came off, concerns me as its bound to weaken the suspension arm and would probably fail its MOT as it stands today.
I’m in two minds to either replace all 4 parts (trailing arms/ rear suspension arms -I don’t want to be treating,if in 3 months time its going to potentially fail its MOT. I had an advisory last December on this. Its more than surface rust! https://imgur.com/eiAeymG Last edited by robbrooks; 22nd August 2019 at 09:15.. |

When in doubt, chuck it out! My upper arms were toast but the lowers were fine! I replaced the uppers and de-rusted, then repainted the lowers and added a coat of underbody wax. The perforation was difficult to see as it was under the rubber isolator.

If the answer is yes and you are concerned about the structure failing then get them done pronto. I can't think of a worse scenario than a car sitting on the side of the road in Europe with broken suspension. If I get an advisory on an MOT then I get the problem sorted sooner rather than later. But of course at the end of the day your car your choice See you in four weeks time.. Regards Ian

As you had an advisory 9 months ago in winter and had 3 or 4 further months of winter I would be inclined to change them. Prodding them with a sharp screw driver may give a better indication but without knowing more I say change

Change the lot, uppers and lowers, you may also find springs are broken right down at the base as mine were. Complete kit from DMGRS includes bushes and bolts. Done mine. Well worth it. Good for another 16 years!

Yes Ian. It is the car I'm going Dutch in! A screwdriver will not penetrate the lower suspension arms and the uppers are fine. The advisory wasn't to replace only to treat. The plan is rust treat with jelonite and final coat with hammerite. They have had waxoyl inside on numerous occasions in the past, so they could be worse. A final spray with Waxoyl will be applied to the hollow parts. However, I will have them inspected before I go to Holland just to be on the safe side.

You can copy from your stored photos resize etc etc.. I find it really easy and I struggle with most tech stuff. This was taken on my phone and loaded via Imgur
