Here's another from FrenchMike - https://www.mg-rover.org/threads/mg-....137032/page-8 images blurred too but a good written description. Thought I might have Arctic's on my handdrive but unfortunately not.

Oh dear, that's another Photobucket ransom.
I'm s-l-o-w-l-y recovering my HowTo's using a new image host, but it's rather inconvenient without editing permission. The particular HowTo you refer to was actually FrenchMike's which he asked me to compile for him. EDIT: Regarding Photobucket's clampdown, I see they've now restricted access to the first ten pages of your originally 'free' account. So, all your historic stuff will never be recoverable unless you pay the ransom. And remember, PB owns copyright to all your stuff. TC Last edited by T-Cut; 14th October 2019 at 08:29.. |

Got a chance to do this today, all went quite easy, usually I’d be afraid to try a job like this.
2 of the brushes had literal nothing left, so replaced all. 2 speed now working , but fan seem to be rattling against the shroud, although looking closely I cannot see where, plus everything is tightened. Any suggestions please? |

You say 2 speed now working - wasn't it a 3 speed fan?
Only reason I can think of causing the rattle with everything tight, would be the fan blades, check that the blades are running true, if doubtful check that the plastic lug retainers haven't broken. Regards |

Yes it is a 3 speed, i meant that the demise test now works, second speed?.
I noticing the fan sometimes needs the tiniest of a touch to start rotating, (most times it does start unassisted) That means the fans is meeting resistance resulting in the rattling noise, but i cannot see where it is rubbing. The lugs are fine, not broken, although i did have to modify the shroud to get a round the pies, does this put it out of kilter? The motor looked in great condition when i too it apart. I think i might try running the motor with no blades attached to see how it performs? That attach the blades and test again? |

I had to cut the shroud around the pipes 😊
Not only me who cannot spell i got this error just now from the forum for this thread “ An invalid threadid or forumid was specified” I’ll have to have a look at the commuter, but it all looked very good when I dismantled it. What would I look for? Once the fan goes it is going full strength, but just as it start it does not start with a kick, would this signify anything? |

Bit late now but there is no need to cut the shroud. As Simon says, the motor is very powerful, the first time I tested one I nailed the motor to a large piece of 2” x 8” to stop it jumping around - now I have Toaf I can regulate the output. Something is wrong somewhere, check that the brushes are moving freely, clean the commutator and score the segments with a craft knife, check the armature moves easily before and after replacing the lid.
Good luck |
