Default Dame Edna Everage RIP.

Barry Humphries claimed on Desert Island Discs that he would be very happy if his obituary didn’t make any reference to Dame Edna Everage, the monstrous Melbourne housewife he first created more than 65 years ago.

A faint hope. This excruciatingly egocentric personality with her bouffant purple hair, winged spectacles, huge feathers and outrageously garish frocks was not known for leaving the stage quietly and in fact returned there on numerous occasions since her “farewell performance” in 2012.

Dame Edna’s fame was such that she opened the Harrods sale, turned on the Christmas lights in Regent Street and made a cameo appearance in The Archers. To top it off, she has been on display at Madame Tussauds since the early Eighties.

I always preferred his other character, Sir Les Patterson, Australian Cultural Attaché.
