Default Rover 75 safety Recall

Evening all.
Never heard of this before but I found a letter from the MG Rover Group hand dated 2004 affecting some owners of Rover 75 Saloons (not tourers). Rover had identified a possible safety issue re road spring failure. And subsequent tyre sidewall damage.
Its asks for the owner to contact their dealer to have a spring retention componant fitted as a precautionary measure.

This letter related to a 51 reg car.

Anyone else seen these letters?
How can you check if your car had gone back to be checked out?

Rog

If it's been back then it will have some tyre protectors fitted, I think the part number is RSC000131. DMGRS did have some but I think they could be out of stock

This is the part, at the bottom of the spring.

Check for the presence of a black or green paint marker on the RH suspension turret between the VIN stamping and the damper fixing (MGR Recall Action Bulletin A173).

to be honest if they knew there was an issue with the springs (and there was, lets face it most of us have had at least one break) they should have replaced them rather than fit something that 'might' save your tyres if they break

Dave, you'll be pleased to hear that the recall notice did specify that new springs should be fitted together with the tyre protector modification.

Default springs

I've had 4 springs fail on my 75.

1st FO/S spring exploded at less than 5mph. Type ripped. Would have been deadly if it exploded at speed. Weather was very cold.

Replace with 2nd hand AR springs + fitted saftey devices

2nd FO/S spring exploded at less than 1mph (moving off). Tyre not ripped open but spring debris rubbed groove in tyre jammed it getting home at 1/2 mile journey at walking pace.

Replaced fronts with brand new foreign made springs. As UK made ones are the ones that fail on Rover, Peugoet, Ford.

Replaced rear springs with std ones. Both were much shorter than they should have been, but you couldn't tell by driving. New springs increased ride height a little.

In my experiance springs fail in very cold weather, just as you set off. Spring protectors required if you have flat based struts. Later struts have built in protectors.

Advice : Spray engine oil on base of rear springs. When rear wheels are off. It's rust that kills rear springs. Also rear top arms rust through. Keep them rust free.

Replace Fronts with less likely to explode type.

I didn't know that. Have you a reference or link to these?

How do I know which brands are less likely to explode? Do you have any recommendations?
