Default Broken down: CDTi rattling noise, lots of smoke, no power

Went to start the car tonight on leaving work and the first thing I noticed was it took several seconds to start (battery's only a year old and it normally starts straight away). Then engine started but with a slight rattling sound, but wasn't sure what it was so drove on. Drove around the car park (which is always slow anyway) and as I pulled out on to the main road I noticed no power, a dreadful rattling noise coming from the engine and lots of smoke coming out of the exhaust. I couldn't drive at more than 2 mph and eventually had to be pushed back into the work car park.

Nothing obvious wrong under the bonnet to my untrained eye.
It drove in to work this morning without any problems whatsoever.

Now back in the office and waiting for the AA to come out.
Any ideas?

AA man not sure but says it sounded more like a misfire when it first starts up. Could be the injectors as he said number 3 sounded quieter than the rest. No codes in ODBII. Going to have to get it towed back home and dumped outside my nearest garage.

White smoke.

No coolant loss.

Nothing like that Klarzy no.

I have a TOAF lead but it's at home and (see other thread) broken.

Just looking up other threads... this sounds like much the same problem:

Just phoned and spoke to Mike. He's very friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately his van has died on him so he can't do any mobile jobs at the moment.
He also said that he's more a specialist on k-series engine rather than BMW.
Pity, but that's a non-starter it seems.

My regular mechanic can't look at it for a week either. So I'm stuck with the local garage... who I don't have a great deal of faith in after they failed to diagnose and fix a fault with a Mondeo they sold me many years ago.

On first startup, it sounds very much like a misfire. The rattle starts only once the misfire gets worse.
