Default Newbie with technical questions

Hi guys

I'm looking for a "second car" and think the Rover 75 might fit the bill. However, I remember years ago when they were pretty new, my brother bought one and instantly had head gasket issues. I can't remember what model he had though as he took it back.

I have seen a diesel 2.0 CDT CONNOISSEUR automatic close to where I live and wondered if these engines are okay?

Also, are there any other issues I should inspect a potential car for?

And finally, as Rover are no longer in business, what is parts sourcing like?

Glad able to help, right car, right forum ask away anything troubling you answers will abound, not to worry about spare parts supplies are plentiful, just one word of warning; generally do not entrust 'general garage/ or mechanics' for work or advice on these cars - they have their own foibles and secrets, advice of the expert kind is available here for free / and there are several expert Rover garages/ mobile mechanics in your area whose work is known and respected at fair prices.

As long as you take care of the fluid and filters on the CDT they are fairly bullet proof and good cars...

Personally I prefer the auto as the cost of extra fuel use versus the cost of a clutch is a no brainer on the kinds of mileage I do...

I definitely want an auto. The one I have seen has history from a local garage called Millhouse, which was the local Rover dealer originally. It has 80k on it.

Nice low mileage, these engines have been known to do in excess of 500,000 miles.

I've also just been offered an almost identical car, but an 02, not an 04, and with 140k on the clock for £700. I know this seller ad I bought my first motor from him in 1990, and I still own it.

The 04 car is £1595. If the £700 one drives and looks okay, would it still be wrong to be interested? I don't mind a bit of a project as this will be a second car, basically to have as back up, and to toy with and show.

I haven't had a close look yet, but the body looks good bar a small dent in passenger door, and the leather could do with a clean but no rips or bolster wear.

They don't suffer from overheating, gasket issues, divert flaps, coils, cam belts and the myriad list of things that many petrol engines suffer from...
I said I think they are bullet proof engines, of course any of the peripherals like alternators, compressors and pumps can fail over time but I am not telling any lies and find your comment a bit off to be honest...
