Default I think I've had enough now.

So I took my ZT 1.8t to TurboDave's to have the flickering oil light at idle investigated, hoping it would be just a sensor issue. Unfortunately my worst fears were confirmed, worn bearings/big end.

I'm absolutely gutted but I think the time has definitely come to cut my losses. The cost of a replacement engine is just too much to bear.

Would any one have any what it's worth in its present condition; 05 plate, body and interior in good condition, recent refurbished turbo, and cat back stainless exhaust? At this time it still drives fine but oil light flickers at idle once it's warmed up. 3 months left on MOT.

Thanks chaps

signs of a throw away society again? - in my time regrinding the crankshaft with new bearing shells was standard practice, as was a re-bore and new pistons/rings (not necessary on the K4/K6 engines as wet liner/piston can be replaced as a unit) - am sure there must still a few engineering shops of this type still in business.

What sort of job is it to drop the sump? If it's relatively easy put a new set of shells in.

Dave recommends dropping in an mg6 engine as that would work out a lot cheaper than rebuilding the current one. Apparently they're bolt for bolt the same but the Chinese sorted out all the short comings of the K series. There's one on eBay for a grand plus £300 to fit it. It's just too much money.

The sump looks easy enough to drop but I'm sure it can't be as simple as all that. I'd be happy to hear it is, but I fear not.

How many miles has it done ? Interested to know how long the big ends last .
As said above , are new shells (with or without a regrind ) not an option ?

I'm replacing a v6 engine with another v6 engine soon. I've picked the engine up for a couple of hundred. Would it be worth checking to see if any cars are breaking or being sold cheap because of clutch failure etc and then just transplant a new lump. Whilst it's out of the car, do all the head gasket, belts etc etc and then at least you know it'll be done.

It's a possibility I suppose. I'll be popping over to see TurboDave in a couple of days to explore options.

I will be taking my car over to Dave on Friday for an MOT and service, and he is a great guy, maybe he can find you one, as he has a lot of contacts in the Motor trade
