Default Handbrake imbalance

Car failed MOT on this, the driver side is working great but passenger side has about a quarter of the power.
I did manually adjust the brakes myself using the adjustment through the rear hubs but I could only jack each side up seperately so maybe the passenger side wasnt adjusted enough.

I know of the weakness of the 75 design but would that cause the imbalance or should I be looking at new handbrake shoes etc.
Car has done 188k miles

Could be you got a false impression, did you bash the drum with a soft mallet between adjustments to allow the shoes to settle?

I did that and all seemed okay when I checked the car on a steep hill although it is hard to check if one of the wheels wasnt locking up enough.

an imbalance can be due to a stretched compensator, have you fitted the modified type as yet?

Not yet.I am trying to see what my best option is as if I put it back for retest it costs me. So do you think it is more likely the compensator over the handbrake shoes?

Mine failed on same imbalance fault, changed compensator for Arctic SS fitted with original shoes and passed no problem. Shoes do nothing except hold car when parked so do not suffer wear generally, the drums though rust with loose rust scale trapped inside, prevention is to use handbrake on last few yards of movement when stopping keeping the drums relatively clean and clear.
