Default 2004 75 Tourer rubbing from O/S rear

Hi All

I’ve a recently acquired 75 tourer which is a bit of a rolling project. Have had a rubbing noise on left turns from the start (comes from offside rear). All okay in a straight line. Had the rear brake discs, pads and handbrake shoes replaced but the noise is still there. Louder when laden and the noise is at road speed. New rear tyres fitted - 225/55 16 on alloys.

Did ask my wife to get in the boot and listen for it but she muttered something about Emmerdale and refused....

Any thoughts on the noise?

Bob

Hello and welcome Bob,

It could be either your handbrake shoes have come away from the backplate (Rusty backplate will cause the pins to pul through) Or a rotten rear upper suspension arm (Check the camber of the rear wheel)

Ill bet its one of those!

Oh.. and have a look in the events & meets section, we are holding a meet in Lincs on the 25th if you want some of us to have a look over the car for you!

Yes, sounds like the upper rear arm on the offside is rotten and collapsing, and the tyre scuffing on the inner arch.

Of course it may be something completely different, take the OS/R wheel off and check the inside sidewall, and make sure the upper arm isn't like swiss cheese.

Or it could be something much less serious Bob, impossible to say without looking

Thanks for the quick replies. Suspension arm sounds favourite as just had all the rear brakes replaced, which cured other strange noises (would have thought the garage might have noticed a rotten suspension arm . There is the end of a bolt that sticks out of the inner wheel arch, and is about 2cm from the inner edge of the tyre. Got a Haynes but the photo you want is never the one you have.... under sealed and mucky so been there a while so assume its meant to be there...

Having the offside will welded next week so will ask them to check whilst it is there. Daft question - is the suspension arm a life changing job?

Certainly look at showing up on the 25th

Sorry for the long winded questions - love the old car and think it’s worth saving

If it's cambered in like the below pic then i would suggest not driving it until it's checked.

Or you could end up like this

With your nice new tyre looking like this

if none of the above, check wheel bearing?
does the noise change when braking?

Its not a terrible job to do, you just have to ensure the captive nut doesn't shear off when undoing the inner bolt.

Use plenty of plus gas and go steady is the normal method.

No it stays the same on braking (now they work). I was thinking of bush or bearing, to be honest, but glad you mentioned the arm - camber angle looks fine - initially I thought the tyres were too wide - but nothing is ever that easy. Pulled the bonnet release last week, and the cable snapped... Great start so far, one arm, half a leg and still spending. Had the bonnet cable changed but it's the latches apparently (arrghh!)

Local garage suggested it needed a good vet, green tent, and a revolver.

Lack of oil caused the latch problem.--

A drop of oil here and there can save a fortune in repairs so get your oil can out and fix your door hinges at the same time.---

Default Update

Had the welding done today. Garage reckoned the rubbing noise I can hear is backplate? Can anyone recommend a good Rover specialist near(ish) to Doncaster?

The cars a “keeper” and want to make sure it is okay

Best ones to all

Bob
