Default In tank petrol filter refitting help please

I have had to open the in tank filter to investigate a sensor problem and fit the orange clip, I am now having difficulty refitting the filter and retaining ring. Any help please on reseating the filter and the ring. The ring does not seem to grip on anything. Does it have to be aligned with anything to get it started? Thanks.

The sensor problem is that it seems to be open circuit so the guage is reading a quarter high e.g. reading quarter full when actually empty. I can live with this.

Thanks Chips but that does not seem to explain any difficulty with fitting the retaining ring.

Read it to the end. The correct orientation of the port seal is the clue to success.

Thanks to all who responded. I had a private message exchange with T Cut who was also very helpful. My problem was that the seal was not properly seated in the tank housing.

It is now all back together And still reading high. Originally this caused me a big problem because I ran out of petrol but didn't think I had because the guage showed a quarter full.

It's a separate problem from FFS and the clip, etc. Maybe one of the float arms is fouling something so it doesn't actually float when the level drops below a certain point. You might check the resistances of the reostats to see if one looks wrong. Ideally, you need to measure these when the tank's full and when it's empty. I can't see another way to do it with the floats in position. If you take them out of the tank the problem might not be there. It's a case of testing things logically. As a last resort (after trying the above) remove each float and examine the rheostat contacts and the overall operation of the system. There's a HowTo on this.

This diagram may help with resistance checks.
