Default Diesel questions from a noob

Hi all,

I'm thinking about buying a diesel powered vehicle, but I know very little about them apart from 3 things:

They have grunt,
They are economical on fuel and
Spelt different from petrol

Generically, are there certain things that are important to know?

Is maintenance expensive if you have very little mechanical experience?

At roughly what mileage starts to bring the gremlins out?

I have bookmarked a nice XJ 2.7D, it's in excellent condition, but has 160,000 kms on the clock. That scares me, as I have never bought a used vehicle with anything over 100,000 kms.

Also not sure whether this thread belongs here or technical help.

I don't know the XJ 2.7D, but diesels generally.

1. Lots of low down torque, so much less need to change gear.
2. Very economical on fuel.
3. Because they ingest oil for fuel, wear in the bores is much less and exhausts last longer.
4. cc for cc, you can roughly multiply the power by around x1.5. So your 2.7D is roughly comparable to a 3.6 petrol engined car.
5. 160,000 Km is nicely run in for a diesel engine. Lots of life left in it. 75 diesels have recorded close to 500,000 miles.

wow, that's amazing, I always thought that was in the realm of big trucking rigs.

change the oil regularly - make sure it ha a good service history

sits at 75mph on motorway all day long giving amazing mpg and if needed plenty left to play with but at your own risk.

thanks again guys,

This current vehicle I have tagged has a full service log book, the only service it hasn't had is the current one; I guess the dealer has no intention of doing that.

75 mph you say, gosh you guys are spoilt, max here is 60mph.

I may be totally incorrect on this point, somewhere I thought I read that the diesel's injectors are quite pricey to service, or is it no different to petrol?

BTW, I have no problem doing these sorts of things (well getting a mechanic to), I just like to know what things to look out for.

Father in law has the 2.7 twin turbo Jag, it's just cost him £1000 for the belts and EGR replacement Factor those sorts of costs in as well and you should be fine, the engine in his car is fantastic, lots of grunt and plenty of speed when required.

Years ago when I was running a Citreon BX17TZD it was in for cam belt service and the garage lent me a BX19 estate that had been a local taxi (mini cab) it was a bit sluggish compared to my BX 17 Turbo but then it had a right to be as the odometer read 498,000 miles. The garage had sold it and then serviced it all the time when it was working and it was on it's 3rd gearbox but the head had never been lifted.

Of course modern diesels are not the same many are just dieselised version of the petrol engine which I am not sure is such a good idea. Citreon and Peugeot back then had diesels sewn up my BX was a 1993 registered one.
