You know there is a remote possibility that this is an elaborate con to avoid the spotter problems the Scotsman has attracted in the past? Rav, whatever is hauling it, Scotsman or diesel, it doesn't leave the Waverley for Fife until 19:25 tomorrow evening, 19:39 at Dalmeny going north, 21:33 at Dalmeny going south.

On the opening of the Borders Railway the Queen's carriage was hauled by a A4 Pacific Union of South Africa, built to the LNER loading gauge.
The A3 Flying Scotsman was built to the same LNER loading gauge, 13 feet 1 inch high and 9 feet wide same as the UK standard loading gauge. So if the A4 Union of South Africa fit OK then the A3 Flying Scotsman will fit. As for the other parts of Railtrack in Scotland that are booked for Flying Scotsman,I am pretty sure Union of South Africa has run on those lines and are passed as standard UK loading gauge. Dave T |

Official as of about 2pm today, it's back on again. Network Rail backed down (maybe they spotted Duotone's very logical putdown of the jobsworths).

Number 9 (Union of South Africa) used to live in a shed at Markinch station. In my BR days the very first turn I did as a volunteer steam fireman in the early '80s was taking it from Eastfield in Glasgow back to Markinch via the bridge.

They cancelled its trip through Norfolk last month.
said too many people would come to see it along the way. Health and safety in over drive. Waist of millions of pounds if its just going nowhere.

Its back on
For those interested http://news.sky.com/story/1696287/fl...after-rail-row
I hope anyone who goes has a good time. Personally although I have always loved trains I cannot understand the hype for Flying Scotsman - wasn't even the first to go 100mph. Now if it were the restored Highland Railway Jones Goods engine, Caley 123 or even City of Truro that would be different |
