Default Failed desktop PSU

My old faithful desktop, a Medion MD8800's PSU, failed a while ago and I have just got a rounduit.

I used to be familiar with PC's and their parts, but now I am way out of touch, so I'm just wondering is it is a standard part or something custom for this model of desktop?

It is marked FSP Group Inc.Model No FSP400-60DN

Has a 5" fan in the bottom as it is mounted. 400W

As output, according to the label it has...

+3.3v 15A; +5v 21A; +12.1v 20A; +5v sb 2.5A; -12v 0.5A; +12.2v 16A

3x old style hard disk / DVD/CD type power plugs on one cable

2x SATA HD power plugs on one cable.

1x floppy type power plug

1x Motherboard power plug 20 way in 2 rows of 10, with one unused.

1x 6 way plug in 2 rows of 3 marked P9 containing 3x yellows + 3x black wires.

1x 4 way plug in 2 rows of 2 with 2x yellow/black and 2x black wires.

At the rear it just has a 240v input socket and a power switch.

I am also confused by how a modern PC powers up and down, it just has a push button on the front of the PC, to switch it on and off. I assume the motherboard tells the PSU to turn itself on and off?

Should I be able to test it as I used to with old PSU's by connecting a load like a HD and switching the mains on, or is there something more involved to test it?

Thanks for any help.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

That usually fail completely or not so if anything, disk, m'board, fan show signs of life its probably ok.
If none are showing life its time to look on ebay...

The fan is a variable speed, runs when it is needed, but the system used to always run its fans including the PSU fan briefly if the 240v was applied. Now it doesn't do that.

The PC also has a display, which showed the time even when the system was shut down, assuming it had a mains supply. The display is also blank.

I have not been able to find a PSU on ebay for my particular system, which is why I am wondering if the PSU might be a standard one or unique for my system.

Ebay is your best option and hopefully you haven't burnt out the motherboard ad CPU and peripherals when the power supply went!

It's probably a standard PSU - if it's got an ATX connector on it, it 99% is.

The motherboard tells the PSU to switch on - you can replicate this by shorting two pins on the ATX connector (can't remember which).

A quick google shows it to be a standard ATX PSU, so getting a replacement shouldn't be a problem.

Depending what components you actually (plan to) have attached to it, I have a slightly less powerful FSP250 (250W) that I've been trying to sell without success on eBay...

It is quite a big system, 3x HD's, DVD, CD, plus a few external bits it supplies, so I wouldn't want to reduce the PSU wattage any, but thanks..

I (have suddenly) had to learn a lot about ATX PSU's - thanks.

Confirmed - the PSU is at fault...

I can get it to start and run its cooling fan at very low speed (linking those above pins), I can have it run a 1 HD load, but if I add any more loads it immediately dies.

It does seem to be a standard ATX PSU, but it does need to have the correct output plugs to be of any use to me.
