I flew about four minutes playing with side slip, that was fun. You've got yaw on, with high nose, drifting the horizon, interesting.

Fred, have you considered joining a flying club? A friend is a member of the Stellenbosch Flying Club in South Africa and even though he doesn’t own a plane or have a license, he often gets to go up and fly when ever his pilot friend lets him take over. It’s a nice arrangement and of course the drinks are on him in the clubhouse.

For a different kind of buzz, have you thought about camping out in a tent in the bush on safari in Kenya? It’s particularly thrilling to listen to the sounds of the wild at night, hyenas, lion, elephant and night jars. Does that appeal? It’s a different thrill and fairly unique. It’s something you would not get in the UK.

Ah Phil, have you not heard the plaintive cry of the natives running loose on Slough High Street on a Saturday afternoon? That's nearer to me than Kenya, and I realize what would be nicer.

I love flying, gliding is magical, but costs have to be considered, and the sight of the kettle next to the tea bags generally persuades me otherwise.

Like I said Ken, I don't like to say anything in case I didn't achieve it.

Only a short walk away the squawk of the go-away-bird can be heard on a regular basis at my local retail park as the staff struggle to deter them.

Good morning Steve, I didn’t know that, I have learned something new, thank you for reminding me about the call of the Go-Away bird, how special.

Have you any plans for the weekend?

Hi Phil. I've been putting off tackling a very neglected conifer in the back garden so weather permitting I might make a start on it. They are very unforgiving and it has grown into a monster. I would happily pay a tree surgeon to deal with it but there is a problem with access atm. Other than through the house access to the rear garden is via the garage on the side of the house and it is currently a bit full and impassable. My sorn R75 on the drive also impedes the opening of the garage door. All 3 of the things mentioned are a bit of an embarrassment for me to think about but in mitigation other more pressing matters have had to be given precedence over recent years. Plus further in my defence I don't know of anyone with a garage on the side of a pre-war semi who uses it for parking their daily driver in.

Back on topic. For many years an ambition of mine was to have a trip in a U-2 spy plane. Flying at ~ 70,000ft while wearing a spacesuit was not so much the appeal. It was the view and the thought of looking way down below to observe swarming Russian fighter jets sent to intercept but unable to do so as they hit their max height ceilings. Even the Chinese weather barroons of 2023 over the US could not outrange a U-2. Click

Good morning Fred, you are blessed with good health and if you have the money then spend it on what you enjoy doing best, don’t worry about leaving it to anyone else.

There is another member here who on his retirement paid £5,000 to go up on a jolly in a Spitfire. His wife was happy with him spending the money and he had the time of his life.

After 12 months of annus horribillus we have decided to spend more on ourselves

What next for you?

Phil, I have delved into flying in a Spitfire as a venture. What is shown as a 30 minute experience is about £3000, that increases by about £500 per 5 minutes.
As introduced to us by another member, the only two seat Hurricane is based at White Waltham near Maidenhead, roughly the same pricing.

The insurance costs must be horrendous as with fuel, the value of those aircraft are immense.

I am sitting here, drinking my tea.
