Before you write the fan off completely, Jules' test states turn the ignition on but I found with my 1.8T the engine had to be running.

It does seem that way, do you know what parts to buy if you want to DIY? Is changing the resistor hard? Or best just to buy an upgraded unit?

For a upgrade youre looking at around £140 for the fan which Jules sells, replacing the resistor just costs around £16 for the resistor i think (cant remember exact prices).
You dont have to solder the wiring on the new resistor. Mine came with crimp connectors so i just used those and secured the joints with the heat shrink and some electrical tape |
