Depends, If you want to be sure about whether you are tired, or cautious, of Paypal: then yes I think there is a need. Writing 'typo' rather than 'you don't know how to spell wary' was politeness: but there you go. If you aren't told when you make errors, and don't know for yourself, then you'd go on repeating them unless someone politely gave you the 'heads up' about them.

The sellers can always send a payment invoice for the item/s that gives the buyer the protection.
I do this if the buyer wants me to If they'd rather not send a PayPal payment whether fees or no fees.
I will only ask to send as a friend payment when I give stuff away & ask for postage costs to be paid.

If I was a trader I'd probably just send PayPal invoices to buyers gives them a receipt to add to there service history if need be.

Who did you gift them to and did the two gents not mind?

My approach:

If someone asks for a "payment as gift", I find another seller.

If a seller in a community such as this does not ask for "payment as gift", I make payment as a gift. Although there is a very small degree of risk, it's the best way to determine whether to bother with someone in the future or not.

Now that is rude - was there really any need for that towards a helpful mod?

For me, the amount that I am sending is also a factor, as well the as the reputation of the person that I am sending it too. If it's large sums of money, I may have doubts sending it as a gift.

OK, so 'anty' was corrected in the quote (which means it wasn't a direct quote anymore. Still don't see it as rude at all: pointing out a mistake .
