Default EGR by pass filthy manifold.

I fitted one of the DMGRS EGR by pass kits today which was pretty straight forward. The valve itself is filthy as is the inlet end of the manifold which looks like it could do with a clean. Any tips on the best way to do this? I have heard of soaking it in petrol overnight but the memsahib would freak out and I don't have a garage.
I thought of taking it to my local garage and see if they would clean it for me. They are a friendly lot and maybe have one of those cleaning tanks.

Arctic Steve describes his method in the link below (post 15) - including hanging it out to dry

I'd agree with the engine degreaser, a decent hot water pressure washer will shift the rest of the crud. It'll make a fair old mess though. I've seen lots of diesel manifolds from every manufacturer cleaned like this, it's a very common problem.

I can just see the look on the Memsahib's face when she comes home and sees my inlet manifold hanging from the washing line and dripping gunge onto the patio!

Don't forget to remove the be MAP sensor before getting stuck into cleaning the manifold.

Pop it in the dishwasher when she is not about, works great, as said remove the sensor first. 😀

Don't do what I did, and leave the cylinder head in there while you nip to the shop, because your partner will come home early... and you'll be in trouble.

Still haven't lived that one down, but it was very clean.

Although not quite a mucky as a manifold, I got an ear bashing off Mrs mininuts for hanging some Mini wheel trims out to dry

Quick update. I took my manifold round to my local garage who's apprentice cleaned it in no time in the "Safety Clean" tank. I gave him a fiver as they were going to do it free. Put it all back together again and what a difference! The car is much more responsive, quieter on tick over and a pleasure to drive. Or is it all in my imagination??? It will be interesting to see if my poor fuel consumption gets better. So glad i tried this before laying out all my hard earned for a new Maff sensor.
I am going to take the old EGR valve round and get them to clean that too then I can keep it just in case.
