Default Air conditioning woes

I have 2 Rover diesel estates.

One had a new air conditioning fan last year, it worked ok for a while. Now it makes a lot of noise when working.Together with a loud whooping noise.
My local garage fitted the fan after removing the front of the car but has no idea whats wrong with it now.

My other one the air con has stopped working altogether.

I was told to call advance cooling in Bristol who said to call MJN motors, they directed me back to advance cooling.

I love my Rovers and prepared to pay to keep them on the road, but no one seems to know how to sort the air con out on these cars.

I am frustrated with this problem, can anybody suggest somewhere within 100 miles plus who would take it and sort the problem out ?
Please help

Hi Jon,

I've never experienced the whooping noise with my car but others have. No doubt the link provided by suzublu will be helpful, but what you need to do is to put "car air conditioning service in Torquay" into Google and choose a sole trader or small business specialising in air conditioning. Do not use the fast fit boys or main dealers.

The car on which the air conditioning has stopped working altogether may well have lost its refrigerant due to lack of use. The solution is the same.

Please let us know how you get on.

Simon

hi Jon, like one of your cars,i was having a problem with my A.C, it wasn't getting cold, but I saw on Groupon they had got a deal with A.T.S Euromasters £37.99 for a re-gas, and they check for leaks, if they find a leak, you do not pay, I came away yesterday from the garage, one very happy Chappy, it was icy cold and all was well, for now anyway, well worth the money, hope that helps Ian.

Yes, we've heard about this before. If they find a leak, they don't recharge it and quite right too. So why is that an attractive deal? The problem hasn't been solved.

Surely what you want is someone to find the source of the leak and repair it, followed by a recharge. That's what an independent air conditioning specialist will do. They offer a proper comprehensive service as opposed to the fast fit outfits who, let's face it, entice you in with a low price in the hope that they can sell you tyres or shock absorbers or brake pads and discs. It's skilfull marketing at the expense of the independents' livelihood.

A few years ago I took my Sterling to Kwik Fit on the hottest day of the year prior to driving from Bristol to London, just in case they could get it a bit colder on the cheap. They plugged it in and walked away. Later on they told me it had a leak, drained all the gas and said they could fix it the next week.

After driving to London and back with no A/C I contacted an A/C specialist who spent a long time with it, filled it up and said there was no evidence of a leak. He concluded they didn't know how to operate the A/C machine.

I don't go to tyre companies for cheap aircon any more...

Thank you Ian,
My local garage tried the re charge route but the problems I am having with noisy fan and the whopping noise was received with a shrug.
Best wishes,
Jon

Jon,

Do you have a 2 speed fan (silver or gold resistor visible through the radiator grille)? If so, the slow speed can be very loud and trick the owner into thinking it's the high speed. Try the following.
With the ignition on, press the windscreen demist button and quickly get out of the car and listen to the radiator fan. Does it start on slow speed then, after a few seconds, increase to the much noisier fast speed?

The first thing we need to do is to make sure that the fan is working on all speeds. Then, to tackle the whooping noise, check the refrigerant charge and the condition of the condenser. A good independent air conditioning specialist will do the latter.
