The problem you describe, is pointing toward a defective EWS3 immobiliser.

I can certainly assist you, however I would need the immobiliser to be removed from the car, along with the DDE4 ECM and posted to me.

To remove the EWS3, you will need a Pentalobe TS30 security Torx Plus bit, these are five point as opposed to the usual six.

A cheap set can be found HERE

The EWS is located behind the light switch, bolted to the A pillar, and looks like this.........

Default Problem solved

firstly many thanks to you all for your helpful reply's we have today found the cause of this problem it turned out to be a problem with the ignition key its self i paid to have new cases fitted as the buttons on my old ones were broken it would seem that when the guy changed the circuit boards over he failed to notice that there is a small block on the side of the internal case. luckily i kept all the old cases and the fitter today noticed that it had not been put in the new case 2 minutes later and he had put this in the the new case and hey presto car started first time although changing these cases is a simple thing i did not do it my self i prefer not to touch what i dont understand thanks again for all your helpful reply's

Your are fortunate the old cases had not been binned. It comes up often on many forums that the transponders are missed when replacing the case and it sounds that you might have made a better job of it yourself!

A common mistake this, always transfer the key transponder block over or the ignition won’t start with its rolling code.

Glad you got to the bottom of it, and posted back to update everyone for those in the future who search for this problem

I’ve moved the thread into the technical help section for future reference BTW

Just goes to show the importance of giving as much detail about the situation as you can think of, no matter how small.

If the key information had been included in your original post then the answer would have been far easier as it has been done many many times. Then again it would not have crossed your mind that it would be connected.

As said, very lucky you kept the old key cases.

It is much appreciated you return to the forum with the solution and will no doubt help others

Hello there I have been a forum member for a good few months now and have read much of the invaluable information available. I also bought my first Connie SE 1.8 54 plate facelift just a few weeks ago.

She is sound mechanically, as I bought the car from an enthusist who is a mechanic, and a recent situation with both my keys has led us to the conclusion that this is the right diagnosis.

Everything else has been checked and is ticketyboo...

Symptons
The scenario was that my main key that I use suddenly wouldn't start the car - after driving for 10mins - humming priming sound and plenty of power in the battery... plenums all good

Anyways, I suspected the immobiliser but it could also have been the starter motor. However, upon using the second key she fired up beautifully, as usual, so I thought the transponder must have scrambled in the main key.

Drove round to a number of places that day, with no issues stopping and starting and parked up on the evening.

Next day on the evening using the second key... dang same thing happened >> power but no turning, just a priming hum

Cheers!

Have you looked inside the offending key case for the transponder
