Default Over zealous ABS

Anyone experienced this before?

Normal braking not hard, just normal stopping for a junction etc, just before you come to a complete halt you can feel the brake pedal pulse as the ABS cuts in. No where near a skid or loosing traction. Have checked all the tyres, and they are all the same size. ABS light comes on at first switch on, and extinguishes after a few seconds as it should, and remains off.

Any ideas before the FOBBS comes out to play?

FOBBS ???

If the cars ECU is detecting a skid situation then the ABS will activate. I would expect it to be doing thiss quite a lot at the moment due to the cold weather, icy/wet roads etc. The salt/grit combination can cause wheels to lock prematurely too.

Even if for one split second a wheel locks the ABS will activate. It's that split second that'll save your life one day....

3 times in the 2 years and 3 months of ownership I have felt this at very low speed and on non slippery surfaces, just as the car came to a halt. No explanation and otherwise perfectly normal operation. If it happened 3 times in a matter of days I would be worried but spead over that entire time, go figure.

Word of caution Rob (well, everyone really), I had EXACTLY the same symptoms a couple of years ago and after 101 tests and looking at things, no ABS fault found.

Turned out to be the inside of the rear discs, quite shocking to be honest, the car passed an MOT like this:

Replaced with shiny versions:

And no problems since.

I presume it was a bodge MOT hence it passed, but you'd only see this damage on the inside by taking the wheel off, the outside faces were perfect. Note, this corrosion was on the inside of BOTH rear discs

Normally I would expect it this weather, but this was happening on dry roads, we've had no rain or snow down here, but this was several times, on various different surfaces, it strikes me as it 'thinks' it's going into a skid even when you're quite a way off that point.

Rich, I'll double check, but there's a receipt in paperwork for new discs and pads all round within the past 6 months.

Thanks Rich, I suppose it is possible mine were / are corroded, first time it happened was just 3 or 4 weeks after I bought it new. I'll get it checked next time wheels come off. 2 front tyre due in a month or so.

Hmm, thinking about it now, IIRC, you can't see the damage/corrosion on the back of the rear discs because of the dust shield in place.

Sorry, it was so long ago now, can't remember, but you might be able to peek through somewhere to take a look?

It'll stand out a mile if they're bad, but I'm sure I didn't find this out until we actually took the discs off.

Anyway, worth checking if you can get to them easily!
