Cashless Society
Is there something going on? Tried to draw a little pocket cash at Tescos. A rank of six machines went "Out of Order" one by one. The other three people lined up got the same screen. Then went to the next service station for my daily ration and the same there - four machines out of order. Went back to Tesco to get petrol and paid at the counter/cashier by card without problem. So, you can pay by any means but you can't get cash out. Greece?

Conspiracy theory's and paranoia aside, yes, I believe we are heading towards a cashless society in the next few years.
I don't agree with it, but I do believe it's not far away.

Yeah the local drug dealers will be carrying chip and pin machines, the diddycoys will ask you to set up a standing order for them when they 'tarmac your drive' and the banks keep all of your money because you can't draw it out to hide under the bed

Back in Janary I was enjoying my Sunday night pint in Wetherspoons. At five past nine I went to the bar to get my third pint of the evening, after standing for five minutes whilst the barman studiously ignored me. I eventually asked about the likelihood of some service. The barman said apps only mate. I replied I am not your mate and what the heck is an app. It transpired that after nine o clock the only service available was to use a smart phone and order by app from your seat. I asked to see the manager who on arrival also insisted on calling me mate, I informed him that I did not have a smart phone, he grudgingly said OK you can buy a pint. That was my last visit to the spoons, Who would have thought that six months later this would be the norm, what a shame for folk who remember when things were as sound as a pound.

It's the same with many car park ticket machines up and down the country, no longer coin machines, can only pay direct with card or by app.
I also find many garage fuel stations with pay at pump seems to be increasing, I much prefer to pay at pump, fuel up and off you go. Lets face it, the self service machines are taking over, there will be no need for cash and no need for people to take the cash from you before long; we will be replaced by machines. |

Certainly don't like the idea of going cashless, but one advantage is that tipping will die out. Don't get me wrong, I am happy to tip for good service, but often it seems to be expected for someone just doing their job.

Had to enter my PIN number yesterday at Wickes, just about remembered the damn thing.
What happens when there's no connection? The more we "progress" and rely on technology, the more vulnerable we become. Surely the events of the past 4 months have shown that???? |

I make a point of only using cash, and not using a card to pay for anything if at all avoidable.
When you pay with contactless type payments, there is less mental connection with what you spend, whereas with cash you can easily quantify what you spend. I was brought up to spend only as much as you can afford, I've never had a bank loan or credit cards, in fact the only loan I've ever had was a mortgage on my house !! It could be argued that the incessant insistence on the authorities knowing exactly what you did, when, where and with whom and how much was spent has an awful lot to do with the current situation, rather than the limp excuses being made that we are all going to die of covid19...... |

not everyone want a credit card as too easy to run up a debt, some people probably have bad credit so cant have a credit card and I cant see the jumble sale, car boot sale or road side home made fruit/veg/ cake/ jam stall having a card machine.
Cashless, have to sort out those problems first macafee2 |

in the current situation most outlets prefer cards anyway so yes, we're already on our way. No minimum spend anymore. My bank statement looks strange, things like Greggs 85p, bus £2.30, even a newspaper 70p
