Iphone 3GS DIY repairs?
I bought an Ipod Touch a few years ago and was quite impressed, but found it was severally limited in functionality compared to a phone version, so it sat on the shelf.
Feeling a bit bored and despite resolving not to buy yet another phone, I bought a used Iphone 3GS with an issue - ear speaker faulty, which I could work around. When it turned up, it actually had three issues in total, the ear speaker, the camera not working and the silence switch. I have resolved it with the ebay seller by way of a partial refund, but now I'm wondering about delving into it, to see if I could fix it. It strikes me that all of these items are in around the same area and as the screen looks fairly new, it might have been replaced and at the same time upsetting the other three things. Anyone any thoughts or experience on delving into such things please?

The above link Harry I posted up as it offers many repair solutions for most of the iPhone models including yours. To carry out the repairs you will need specialist tools as you know. Thanks for your email about this. I posted up the link in case anyone else needed to carry out a repair 'at their own risk' |

If it's had a recent screen fitted, you can bet your life the camera has been damaged as the sensor usually comes away from the camera itself when removing a small metal plate (the back of the sensor sticks to the plate & breaks the camera)
A replacement camera isn't expensive to buy. There's also a chance that at least one of the small connectors isn't sat flush (you'll see what I mean when you take it apart) they can be a bit fiddly. |

Having checked the serial number, it suggests the case should be white, but it is a white 16Gb 3GS. I don't know how much value to put on this information, but it is definitely a 16Gb. Do the different colours denote the memory size? If this is the wrong colour, the case might have been swapped - I'm doing a great deal of guessing, until I can get into it.

I have a magnetic mat for putting all the tiny screws from an iphone on.
Basically it's a flexible magnet with a photo of the inside of an iphone stuck to it. The screws on the photo are colour coded, so you know which ones to remove first, and which ones to replace last. I'll see if I can find a link. Definitely makes the job easier

Here you go
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAG-MAT-ma...-/180914854739 http://youtu.be/gYP5R_7owsQ If you can't get one or wait for one, just print off a picture of it. At least it will show the order of screw removal.

Steve, the photo is very helpful and shows what a fiddly job it is to open one up, access the cables and the parts. Requires a steady hand too, so all the best Harry

You'll also need a hairdryer of course & you need to be very careful when trying to release the screen.
They break very easily ! Before you bond the screen back in, make sure there is no debris on the seating surface as you won't want to disturb the screen again once it's stuck in. |
