A “Polishing Shock”
I’m going to be thinning down my classic car collection and am currently working on my Vanden Plas Princess 1300 with a view to selling it.
To give the car the Wow factor I had intended to get the bumpers and overriders rechromed. Well that was up until today when I got an estimate for the work. £400 for each bumper plus £50 for each overrider totalling £1,000.00. I think it will have to be a good polish up with T Cut or the likes. |

I’ve got both Autosol metal polish and Autoglym polish but the bumpers are quite pitted so they could do with more than polish but I’m not spend a grand to do it.

Quite simple, along the lines of the saw dust in the gearbox. Use this
then as a prospective buyer walks towards it, a couple of pokes in the eyes

If the pitting is mainly on the surface, you may get away with some fine wire wool and a polish. A Brillo used to work a treat on old chrome wheels I had on a bike as a kid, and some hub caps for an HC Viva of my dad's. It didnt take the pitting off, but took the staining away and 'softened the feel' of the pitting, making it much less obvious (genuine Brillo worked, but cheap pads didnt!)
Obviously test, if you are willing to try it on a small hidden area lol (quality of things like Brillo is bound to have changed in the 30+ years since I have tried it on chrome). I was not so particular when I was between 9 and 12 lol. But it was impressive how well it came up.

Follow your initial thinking Jim but its an old car(no disrespect) and the condition is what it is and maybe the new owner would want to take the chrome job on, its an enthusiast purchase. Just my thoughts. Chris S.

I’ve actually got a brand new “old stock” front bumper but it’s a standard one. The Vanden Plas bumpers differed slightly, more so on the rear which curls round at the sides more than on other ADO 16 models.
Today I received an order from Martrim (excellent service BTW) which included some bonnet insulation which I’m replacing and the boot interior trim (millboard) Tonight I’ve managed to cut out from the millboard new sides using the old torn trim pieces. I’m also going to trim the rest of the boot behind the seats to match the sides. |

£1000 for the bumpers, just goes to show just how much they spend on programs like “ car SOS “ when they have everything re-chromed.
