The "facelift / mk2" thread
Having recently done a facelift / mk2 conversion on my mk1 tourer I was standing back taking it in, really examining it.
I've come to the conclusion that the mk2 changes are actually a very very clever visual upgrade for mg rover at the time. I used to not be a fan of the mk2 but now it's grown on me massively and I wouldn't have changed my mk1 to mk2 unless I really liked it. So folks, I'm curious about other people's opinions about the mk2 styling. Obviously it was a rushed internal effort for mg rover but I think they did extremely well. So what aspects of the mk2 styling do you enjoy the most. Also what styling if alloy do you think suits the mk2 the most also.

I believe it's down to the need to meet stricter pedestrians impact legislation. The Mk2 looks far more forgiving around the bumper area that the Mk1. I don't want to try it out though! Good idea by the way!

When my dad used to have his black MK1 75 I wasn't a fan of the MKII design. When it came to looking for another 75, my dad wanted a diesel and one in black again. After months of looking for one, we found a black MKII connoisseur quite local to us. I didn't think I'd like it but thought we'd take a look anyway.
After seeing it in person we actually really liked it. My dad now prefers the MKII shape, and also likes that you hardly ever see another MKII on the road. Comparison of the two. It's a tough choice between the two, as both designs looks fantastic to me. |

I always preferred the MK1 styling, but my next car will be a MK2 V6 tourer auto. As you can tell, they have grown on me as-well :xmas-smiley-005:
As for alloys, either Gridspokes or 11 spokes...... Last edited by LotusLC; 1st December 2015 at 10:32.. |

Looking at your tourer in the video, I think silver 11 spoke alloys will suit it best.

Strange thing is when you have a facelift, you often think another one is coming towards you, only to realise its a BMW.
The front end is very much BMW

On a Rover 75:
1st - Premium 2nd - MkI 3rd - MkII (no photo as I've not had one...) Though on a ZT (-T V8) the MkII looked quite smart

Styling
Interesting debate. I have a firefrost mk2, which I really like. I prefer the light oak to the walnut even though its plastic. I've changed little things that I didnt like. The gear knob, and the gearstick and handbrake gaiters for zt items. Aesthetically and tactile-ly a great improvement. i prefer the mk 2 rear end-the bumper and the boot plinth.
However I really loathed the front bumper and lights.to my eye it looked ungainly and cheap. To the extent that I swapped it for a mk 1 zt front end , IMHO the best of them all. But, having seen black and silver mk2s in the flesh, I think those colours suit the mk2. Im now of the opinion that the colour of the vehicle is totally relevant to the integrative visual effect of the car. I do think that Firefrost is the best colour, just doesnt suit the mk2 front end. |

While I like both Mk1 and Mk2 designs, I feel the Mk2 is fresher looking and doesn't look out of place among more modern cars, however I also think the ZT carries the Mk2 styling better than the 75. I know the retro styling of the Mk1 is the reason many people prefer that design.
Colour wise, I respectfully disagree entirely with JimSharp39 above (just my opinion), the Mk2 looks best in the more colourful options while the Mk1 suits black, silver and the more muted colours. Firefrost looks fantastic on a Mk2... also solar red and ignition blue. |

Speaking of the ZT's, I always liked the Mk1 for the "tighter" look around the headlamps and bumper / wing cut out. It flows better.
The Mk2 (which I have) was a successful update - although with the downgrading of materials (lack of stainless mesh) and more shoddy fit it does jar. The bumper / wing cut out does not align properly on 90% of cars and the gaps around the headlight when you get up close are pretty bad. With a bit of rubber trim to fill the gaps or better fit it would have looked much better. |
