Thanks for all the replies, I managed to find one on facebook marketplace not too far away, and quite cheap. I forget the brand but it's nothing special, looks very much like the one in the photos above. I tried it this evening, seems very secure, far more secure than I was expecting as it just grips on to the tow ball. Only thing is I don't know if I'm loading them wrong, but the bikes seem to hang out a fair way either side of the car. The frames are a bit difficult to get to sit on the arms of the carrier.

I have to be careful when loading my bikes.
I do use a trailer board as there is no way you'll see the rear lights clearly.

I have a bike with front and rear suspension. It's a pig to mount.
I tend to have the over hang on the pavement side rather than towards the traffic.
I take it nice and steady and give as much room as possible when over taking parked cars etc.
There are better cycle carriers on the market, but for the money this type is great.

Please note, the silver metal clip at the bottom should be hooked on the silver hook on the right.
I just fitted it quick to post the photos!

I wondered what that silver bit was for. The one I've got doesn't have that clip. Just the cups that clamp the tow bar, then push down the bit that spreads the arms apart, and lock it with the key and that keeps it gripped on. I put a fair amount of force into it and didn't move.

I think that's the problem, my bike has front and rear suspension, and my wife's bike has front suspension. I couldn't seem to get them both on with the handle bars at the same side of the car, so I ended up with a back wheel sticking out either side of the car. It was rather hot though, so hopefully if it's cooler tomorrow I'll have another go. Mine is especially difficult as the rubber bits the bike sits on is about 2" across, and the gap in the frame that it need to go through is about 1 1/2"!
