Default Message center upgrade

I am thinking of upgrading the IPK to a message center version.

I'm finding it difficult to get hold of a Petrol one with Orange lights. Could I get a diesel version and swap the guages over?

I noted in http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ad.php?t=10542 that is is quite easy to do but I'm not sure of the diffeences between the Petrol and Diesel variants.

I believe all the IPKs are the same. I have fitted a petrol IPK to my CDTi for a test and the rev counter was in the right position, but the reading on the overlay was obviously wrong.

You are probably aware that you will need to get the IPK coded to your car, of course.

Yeah I was aware of this. It's just getting hard to get an Orange Petrol unit. I am thinking of buying a Desiel model from SMC and swapping the dials thats all. After all I don;t want the nasty Desiel name over the petrol guage do I.

Would have thought that you would only need to change the dial on the Rev Counter.

It may be worth buying a cheapo secondhand unit on eBay and drive with it for a few miles to ensure that it works OK. Maybe some kindly member on here would have one to give you.

If everything looks OK then you could buy a new unit.

Don't expect diesel consumption figures when fitted to a petrol, of course

The overlay comes in one piece, so you just change the whole lot.

I think doing that would screw my mileage up. Using a second user unit would mean my car would adopt the higher mileage. As the cars only done 34K in 8 years I don't want to ruin that.

That wouldn't happen, Steven. You will just get an "err" in the trip screen of the other unit. As long as you only drive for a short distance, the original will be fine when plugged back in. I did this with a new cluster and my original unit was fine when I returned it. Keith (the T4 expert) would probably clarify this.

Good idea, but quite impossible.

I recall that also but I think it was a bit of red herring. IIRC, when the guy was questioned about it he couldn't clarify specifics.
