I Think I've Wounded My Car......
So I had the thermostat mod fitted to Tarquin today at the NANO meet (Big thanks to whoever did it for me ) and for the first time since I had the car the temp gauge was reading 9 o'clock. It never got any hotter than that and everything looked good.
BUT THEN...... Halfway back home I got caught in a traffic jam. All was fine for a couple of minutes, when suddenly the temp gauge went mad and shot all the way up into the red zone. Car went into limp mode and temp went down again once we started moving, but it always hovered at the very top end of the gauge. After gingerly getting home and letting it cool down I check the coolant level and it was empty. It was only after I tried to refill the tank I realised why it was empty, as it was coming out just as fast as I was putting it in. Immediate thought was that I'd ran over some debris which was then kicked up and punctured the radiator, but after talking to dad I can't rule out a failed bottom hose. Are either a possibility, or have I gone and broke my car?

I can only recount my similar experience. My 1.8 at just over 95k ...empty header tank, tried refilling, straight out, onto the floor, ...water pump failure.
You didn't mention what engine you have in your car. |

As with anything... Check the last thing that was changed if everything was ok beforehand.
Are you sure you had the water level correct following the stat fitment? Check water level when cold, check for any signs of leaks.

Hi Dave
It was me that changed the inline stat. Using artics funnel and bottle most of the water was captured and then returned to the tank. The engine was run up to temp and the top hose was very hot as you'd expect when the stat opened. No wetness was around the two joints on the top hose so I'm fairly comfortable that that's not the problem. As. Said where does the water come from ? If its running out that quick should be obvious. You don't have an undertray so as you say could have been motorway debris causing a sudden failure or as the rad is now getting very hot water the bottom hose joints could be expanding due to heat for the first time in ages. Try filling it again in the morning and see what happens Sent from my Bush10Nou using Tapatalk |

Sorry to hear this happening Scott. The way you describe it, there is no sign of water anywhere leaking. I can remember a member saying that one of his coolant pipes going where there was an overlap of the rubber on the pipe during the process of being made.if that makes sense.Hope you have not done any damage to the engine. Fingers crossed. You don’t think you have/had a air lock after filling back up do you?

I wish I knew. I couldn't see anything from the top of the engine from where I was standing, and the stat mod was still bone dry too. All I know is I could hear the water pouring out from somewhere and it was leaving a nasty wet patch on the road.
On a side note - the fan is also working fine, as it was trying like crazy to cool it down.

Where is the coolant/noise coming from and landing in relation to the car? As an example, if there is no undertray, and the coolant was landing on the ground roughly beside the driver's side wheel, it will suggest the original thermostat housing/waterpump area. From below the passenger side wheel would suggest pipework relating to the FBH (location). You get the idea.

Your description is that the water came out whilst filling so we're not talking about you putting your face near a hot engine. Get some goggles on, and get under it whilst someone else is filling.
I suspect it's going to be quite straight forward, good luck. |
