Default Rover 75 diesel won't start.

Out of the blue my 75 Diesel refused to start this morning. All I hear when turning the key is a click and no cranking.

It is one of the later single fuel pump ones and before this morning it had no problems. Newish battery and rebuilt alternator that was chucking out 14 plus volts.

Any ideas?

Either a bad earth or a duff battery.Even if the alternator is throwing out 14+ volts it dose not mean to say the battery is storing it.

Also check the connections on to the starter motor mainly the small spade connector.

As John says, could be a duff battery, bad earth or bad low tension connection on the starter. Failing that, your starter probably needs a new set of contacts/solenoid plunger - see Steve (Arctic's) how -to on how to fix this.

If you have a spare key try it.

Sometimes the transponder in the fob comes loose, that would give all the symptoms you're describing.

Yep, a single click when you turn the key points to worn starter motor solenoid contacts.

Hi Mark.
Click the link and have a good read any R40 MGZT that as above 65000 miles it would be wise to check and replace as a preventive measure. Arctic

Quick update, back from work, tried turning it over. First turn click and nothing. Second time it fires up.

So is it a dying starter or could it be a dying position sensor?

My money is on the starter - I had one behave like this on a previous 75 that I owned - sometimes it would fire up fine, other occasions you just got a click. New contacts in the starter fixed it. For 10 pounds or so, I would go for new starter contacts first.
