Jury service
Hi All,
I have just been summoned for jury service in the next couple of months (never done this before) and I would like some tips! People I have talked to in the past have said that you will end up out of pocket is that right? Presumably my company will pay my normal salary but what about travel expenses, parking etc as I will have to travel into Liverpool city centre and park up for the day (not cheap). I have no problem doing my civic duty but I really don`t want to end up worse off than I started. Help Neil |

That looks like some good information there, will have a good read tomorrow. Have you done jury service before? is there a dress code?

I did it about 3 years ago.
I got paid ok by my employer and was not out of pocket as I was able to claim any excess travel and parking. Lunch etc was provided each day. The Sheriff Court I was at sent good instructions about what to expect, including dress code. From memory I wore smart shirt and jeans |

I've done it twice at my local crown court, Snaresbrook, and enjoyed it nor was I out of pocket.
My late wife was summoned to attend the Old Bailey in London, she then spent 5 months attending the court on a case that involved precious metal and Heathrow. Nor was she out of pocket, and she really enjoyed it and wanted to go again but was disappointed when the judge said, " as this has been a long and arduous case you, the jurors, are excused from attending anymore jury work".

Jury service can be really interesting, I did it about 10 years ago and for some reason ended up as foreman. We were looked after well and it was well run at the time.

Done it three times now. great if you get on a case. Be prepared for some long boring days if you don't though. T shirts with slogans are not a good idea. Take a good book or similar

I've not done it, but I know those that have. One sat on a couple of trials over 10 days. The rest of the time they were sat about waiting. He did say it was interesting though.
Strange how some have done it several times, and others none. I can't think of one person that's done it in my family. Luck of the draw |

I done it once about 10 yrs ago,the most important thing, don't fall asleep and at the end the judge will more or less tell you what vote.

I did it a few years ago and as I work for myself I was worried about being out of pocket. I did get my expenses back and I think £25 a day but if I dont work I dont get paid.
I was happy to do my civil duty and I did find it interesting. The worse part for me was being told I had to go in and when I got there being told I was not needed. Those that live around Oxford and have to travel in will know what I mean. |
