Door handle replacement

I wanted to replace 3 of the door handles with some that are better condition. Reading through the Haynes manual it says to remove the window glass on the front doors to improve access. Is there a way of getting the handle off without having to go through window removal?

HI Steve.
It is door card off so you can access the sliding spring which holds the thumb cap of the handle, with this removed you open the door handle and slide it to the rear of the car, re-fitting is the reverse.

If you try and remove the thumb cap/key hole cap on the drivers side without sliding the spring clip it will break the locating lugs in the cap.

Thanks for the fast reply.

With the thumb cap at the rear of the handle is it necessary to remove the window to get the access? When the Haynes book says 'improved access' rather than essential, I wondered if it was doable without taking the glass out.

I did have the door card off but once I got to the part about removing the window and regulator I decided to stop there and put it back together as it was going to take way too long and it didn't look straight forward to get to the spring any other way.

I needed to refit the door card anyway so it wasn't time lost but was hoping to cover two things at once.

Thought I'd have a look at my Haynes manual just out of curiosity, and the way it reads to me is that you only need to take the door glass out if you want to remove the door lock. If you're just changing the handles it shouldn't be necessary.

Ignore my last post - just spotted para 13.5 which says remove lock for the front doors.

No worries. Thanks for looking though.

I don't think there's a way around it, looks like the window needs to come out. Ah well, project for another day. Thankfully the other two are the rears which it seems the window doesn't need to be removed.

Only need to loosen the two holding bolts and lower the window and the glass comes out - 2 minute job with the door card removed.

As above, the door glass comes out very easily...literally a few minutes, if that.
Two ten mil bolts, loosened slightly to free the glass. It then lifts pretty much straight out with the window trims removed.

You don't need to remove the door lock... with the top internal door seal/trim removed ( top of door card, against window ) the clip is easily accessed down through the gap left where the window was.

Once you've done it the first time, it's pretty simple second time around...
