Hi Richard.
For sure the board as burnt out and the motor as been damage by the brushes or the brush holders, certainly something as come between the two contacts.

You could always look for one on the bay with silver resistor and change it for a gold one, or go for one of Jules fans.

Default Fan and Resistor Expensive

PS Jules is away until mid week so a fan will be sometime coming.

Is there an alternative to the fan system from Jules?

Nearly £200 seems expensive for a fan and a resistor! (no offence to Jules of course )

Cheers Arctic, yes I guess these are the options. Is one better than the other? Seems Jules one may be longer lasting?

Rich

PS looks like I'll have another one to do on my wife's Tourer as that had packed up this year.

I haven't ever read of an MGR 2-speed/resistor type motor packing up. They're generally regarded as long lasting and reliable. A replacement must be from a diesel and of course an appropriate slow speed resistor (100 watts) should be fitted in place of the OEM one. Other than that it's a straight fit, plug and play. Arctic's your man for one of these.

The two speed (with resistor) is a much less complex motor and much more reliable. The unreliable part of the two speed, is the original silver resistor which was not adequate for the job, so many will not have had that replaced with an uprated gold version.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I guess I'd have to go to the local breakers yard, find a car with a resistor fan on-board, remove it fit a new resistor and plug n play hopefully back into my old non-resistor car? I assume both types have the same electrical plug sockets?

Thanks, Rich.

Yes as long as it's from a diesel. The speed control system is unique to the diesel, so a petrol fan system isn't compatible. The actual motor's OK, but for plug'n'play replacement, you need the whole thing, motor/fan/surround/control box/leads-plugs. The plugs will go straight onto yours.

Superb, thanks or this.

If its a sunny day I may be tempted to roll about in a breakers yard. But given the large dog at the local yard and the piles of poo one has to navigate I sometimes wonder whether a brew and a read of the paper might be more satisfying!
