which oil for a diesel?
what oil would best suite the needs of my Rover 75 2006 diesel CDT?
The handbook says 5w/30, 5/w40, 0w/40 so a choice I dont use the car much and may sit for a few weeks without being used. it will tow a caravan from time to time and lives in the south of england. probably wont go over 80...even without the caravan but with the caravan will try to tow at the speed limit unless climbing hills so will be slower. Should I go for Castrol, liquid engineering...love the advert, Mobil, Shell or something else and what viscosity? needs to meet ACES A3 and B3 spec. thanks for the advise macafee2 |

My handbook says: Diesel engines: 10W/40 or 15W/40 engine oil meeting both
ACEA A3 and ACEA B3 specifications. Oils manufactured to the above specifications are suitable for use in temperatures between -20°C to +30°C (if climatic temperature falls outside these limits, seek advice from your dealer). I used Asda's own Semi synthetic 10W/40 when it was on offer last time and it seems to be fine. My car has done 174,000 miles and does not use any oil between services which used to be 15,000 miles when I was a commuter but is now a lot less now I have the best job ever! Retired! The oil meets the ACEA A£ and B3 specifications so why buy dearer oil because it is a well known brand, you are only paying for advertising and sponsorship. HTH John |

Whatever you decide, (not Castrol in my opinion) EuroCarParts have 25% off if you use promo-code PARTS25
(My particular choice). http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Ro...2481&0&cc5_245 or.. http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Ro...2471&0&cc5_248 Ciao.

Well im glad you have the corrected handbook with the right viscosities in it. Id probably go for a 5W40, its the most readily available. Dont be concerned by brand, its mostly marketing and there is no evidence one is better than the other.
Because you have a diesel give this a try. It greatly exceeds the spec we need meeting the highest requirements in the car industry, and is good value. You also get a free filter at the moment. Remember though that you need 6.8 litres in this engine!! http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/ca...6081&0&cc5_248 Dont forget to use the code PARTS25 for 25% off (as well as the free filter).

When I bought my 75 CDT I've changed oil for Valvoline 10w40... it was OK for few weeks, but when it become cold in the morning after starting the engine it was working like VWs TDI (and it was ok after 2-3min)... Changed oil for the one advised by BMW for this engine - 5w30 with BMW Long Life cert. ... No problem now and engine seems to rev more freely.

Don't forget that you will need over 6 litres each oil & filter change, so you will need more than one 5L can.

5W 30 for me; and I am not afraid of the dreaded magnatec. Castrol always been fine for me; the lower viscosity I feel helps a bit with MPG and I do not use any oil even at near 100k.

The correct, thinner oils will save a little fuel, more than the extra cost of the oil that's for sure.
