Default Clutch packed in

Wife was driving car and all of a sudden the clutch pedal stuck down and would not return.
Called the rac whom towed the car home as he said it looks like the clutch slave cylinder was the problem.
He said he was not sure if the slave cylinder was in or outside the gearbox.
Does this sound correct and where is the slave cylinder and is it an expensive fix and roughly what should I expect to pay for the repair.
Thanks in advance.
Any recommendations for a repair in Ayrshire Kilmarnock?

As far as I've read here it is in the Bell Housing, and it is expensive, very expensive...... Sorry.

Just under a grand for mine, in 2008

If you shop around you may be able to get it cheaper though.

You can do it yourself for under £300.....not too bad a job if you can borrow an engine hoist for the gearbox...

Its inside the bell housing and is a relatively straight forward job to do yourself, the part itself is £70, i bought and fitted 3 this week. Nothing to bleed up afterwards or anything like that.

Not a very knowledgeable RAC man then?

He should have checked/ topped up the master cylinder (above clutch pedal, inside cabin), then checked around for any fluid leaks. The master cylinder will leak onto the carpets. The slave is inside the gearbox clutch housing and will show leakage under the engine.

Simply topping the master up, bleeding it and keeping it topped up will usually keep the clutch (and car) going for a good while. All the pedal going to the floor means for certain - is that it has run out of fluid. The master cylinder does hold much fluid in reserve.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.
