Feb 6th 1952
On Feb 6th 1952 King George Vl passed away and Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth ll. The entire country mourned in the fashion of the day, there was no TV for the masses and BBC controlled radio programmes. Other stations like AFN and Radio Luxembourg were available, faintly and with lots of crackles, but only during the evenings.
Daytime was thus all BBC, and we had 'mournful music' throughout the entire day. The only other occassion this was imposed on us all as a mark of respect, was in 1965 when Winston Churchill died and the same pattern was invoked. With the choice of TV and radio available 24/7 in today's world, I doubt we will experience such mass mourning again. Chips |

When Winston Churchill was buried I was working at a motor factors in Bitterne Southampton. We never had a customer all day! Can you imagine that happening today, people can't do without shopping on a Sunday now!

Difficult to judge how people will react these days. When Diana died there was a mass outpouring of public grief which caught the Royals and many others by surprise - me included. I think that saturation media coverage as happened in Diana's case does affect how some people react and once enough momentum is whipped up there is pressure on people to conform or be seen as out of step and disrespectful. Personally, modern-day displays of mass public grief don't appeal to me.
Not sure that we will ever experience in this country the recent scenes from North Korea. |

When the late king passed away I was in Egypt serving in the Royal Air Force and I can remember the day very well as if it was only yesterday

Derek, can you remember the time spent changing all the King's Regulations to Queen's Regulations?

Yes I believe it was a very sad day for the country, even though I was only a nipper at the time but I do remember vaguely some of the Coronation Celebrations.
What a reign our Queen has had, she has worked tirelessly since and is currently the 2nd longest Monarch in History, a record which will be broken in just a few short years. We wish her the health to reach that all time record. JYJ and lets not forget HRH is a Rover fan |
