Default Diesel Tank Leak

Gave the car a good drink today, and she has shown her gratitude by spewing diesel out from the top of the tank !!!. Parked level and switched off, the dripping stops, on a slight incline it's back to a fairly decent flow again. When I bought her the garage installed a new in tank pump, is this fitted on the drivers side ?, as it's mostly mostly dripping from the offside/ side of the tank.I think the tank is generally sound, just not accustomed to be being this full. Was thinking tank/ fuel pump seal maybe twisted/pinched/ not seated right, can this be twitched from the inside of the car, or do I have to drop the tank to get to see if it's the culprit.

Thanks in advance.

Groover.

This tells you all about it. It's written for the petrol tank, but the diesel is identical regarding the outer seals.

Thanks for the replies Suffolk boy ~ T-Cut.I suppose I'd better run the tank down low first, I've got a trip up to Teeside from Kent tommorrow, hopefully as the level drops in the tank, the leaking should stop.Do you think it wise to replace both while I'm in the same area, and the fuel filter too ?

Groover.

P.S. where do I order your retaining ring tool T-Cut !!

Might also be worth checking the fuel cooler/ little radiator behind the off side rear wheel. You can check it without raising the car, by just looking up under the corner of the bumper from the rear.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

You don't need any sort of special tool to get the retaining ring off the top, just a good chisel and good hammer. Diesel doesn't ignite with a spark.

I had exactly the same problem with mine. In my case there was no seal there at all.

The good news is the seal will slide over the top of the in tank pump, so no need to pull it all the way out.

Actually, the retaining ring should be torqued to 28ftlbs on reassembly. Hence the nut on the tool.

Default update

Tackled this job today and discovered that the drivers side pump seal was missing !!! Many Thanks to all who replied.

One thing I did notice prior to starting, was that there was loads of downward movement on the pump holder top, suggesting all was not well. For anyone attempting this for the first time and replacing both seals, do the passenger side one first, if the seal is in place, it will give you a guide as to what the other side should look like, and is the easier of the two to replace.

Regards

Groover.
