whilst I don't think my original question has been answered, the consensus is that running in does prolong the life of an engine.

Being brought up with old cars and old engines and having old car mentality, I'd run in my own car.

Off course it's logical and common sense to run an engine in or you will end up running out sooner than desired to buy spare parts.----
