We cannot diagnose this with the given evidence so far.
As Brian says maybe speak to Bruce first.
He has many contacts in Oz .
Are you a member of any British car clubs in Oz?

Well that's worrying. As I think someone pointed out, I wonder if the tensioner/idler devices were renewed at the same time. Will you be asking the garage which did the original work to take responsibility?

Simon

Agree with Simon.
Further more the actual diagnosis has to be investigated further.

ie
Has the belt actually snapped or come off one of the pulleys out of view.
How far did they strip it down?
One would have to question either the workmanship or quantity of parts fitted.

Is the plastic idler the cause and was the metal tensioner set up properly after the pin was removed.
Were the new cam bolts under/overtightened?
Were the bolts new?!

Was the water pump the cause?
Did the lower sprocket fail (very rare)
Did a camshaft snap ?(also rare)

Default still waiting...

Yes, the person who did the work also doubts diagnosis and is travelling to assess for himself. He is indeed one of Melbourne's experts from the dealership. Waiting till Australia Day holiday is over. I will consider all the items suggested also, thanks

Default mobile again but puzzled

Did a camshaft snap ?(also rare)

Yes Jules, it seems it did. I have not yet seen broken parts. Mechanic is mortified and taking some responsibility, but can't account for reason and is suggesting oil grade should be 0 to 40, not 5 to 40 as manual says and may have 'gummed up' cam shaft. I find this difficult to believe.
New valves have been fitted, but cylinder liners are intact with no coolant leakage.
Picking her up on 7 March and will inspect broken parts.
Cheers Don

Thanks for the update Don. I remember reading about one other instance of a camshaft breaking. If it was anything to do with the grade of engine oil, there would be many, many more failures.

If the camshaft is indeed broken, it is likely to be either lubrication related or fatigue. Barring a manufacturing defect
.

It will have nothing to so with the grade of oil. That's is a given.

But it could have to do with a general lack of oil. Either an oil loss generally, a problem with the pump, or may a blocked supply to some of the bearings on the cam.

Since these are furthest away from the pump, they will be the first to suffer, generally.

I would carefully ascertain if there is enough oil in the sump. Then check the relief valve, the oil filter and then the supply holes to the cam bearings.

Fatigue you will be able to spot looking carefully at the break. It will have two different looking surfaces. One where fatigue has worked its way, usually a matt surface, and then one where the final break has taken place, which will look fresh and be rough.

I would have thought that there would have been some warning noise prior to complete failure if the problem was a lack of oil supply...
