Thanks for the pictures and write-up, I guess the Rover backplate wouldn't fit the BMW one?

Quite a lot of "adjustment" there, I just hope that my superglued newish press fit spindle fan will hold onto its blades at least until I find a genuine replacement I can work on.

No it won't fit. The BMW is higher, to accomodate the brushes and coils, which sit higher in the motor. The Rover is flatter, this is where the length difference comes in.
The old Rover plate is perfect for shaping the new BMW plate.
The fixing points for the plate on the motor housing are however identical, so a shame they don't just swap over.

As for the fan, JB weld two pack epoxy is a very good substance to use where you want things to be glued and stick!
