I presume you leave it running till the thermostat reading stops rising...
Diesels don't usually get up to 88 just on idle even with a new thermostat.
Just not enough Kw heat output..............which is a good thing........means not too much energy wasted as heat!

Thanks Jules - I'll take it for a run then. If the thermostat isn't working you may well have another customer for that job you don't like

Jules.

Just thought I'd try this on mine, set test mode and took for a 7 mile drive (one way), temp reached 87 just around the 7 mile mark then alternated between 86/87 on the return.

Does this sound OK?

Thanks in advance,

Simon.

It works either way. I just think switching the power on first is the logical way. Of course if you want to drive with it, starting the engine first is also logical. The revised instructions are less likely to encourage trying to set diagnostics while actually driving.

do I leave it running until the temp gauge on the dash goes up as high as it can?
No, the actual temperature will be displayed whatever the gauge says. It will display any temperature, below or above zero. In freezing weather, it may show -1C or lower. The Schaaper gauge will also beep when it reads below 0C for the coolant. This beep persists until the reading is positive.

I have just fitted a new stat in my diesel. The OBD shows 75C when the gauge reaches and stops at half scale. The OBD carries on rising to 88C. Then it moves between 87-89C. It takes much longer to warm up if the interior heater heater is on because mine doesn't have a FBH.

If I had a diesel, I'd personally try to get the temperature into the same area as the petrol versions (95-100C ideally). If that can't be achieved using a suitable thermostat, I'd look at radiator mufflers to augment it. I'm sure the engine generates enough heat, it's simply being dissipated by the cooling system. I'd also fit the Schaaper gauge so I was aware of what's happening temperature-wise and adjust the mufflers to suit the conditions. I'm sure in my own mind this would improve general running as well as the fuel efficiency/consumption. I'm really hoping somebody will take this course even if experimentally and give it a good trial.

Anyone who watches "Ice Road Truckers" just needs to look at the front of one of those trucks to see exactly the kind of thing TC means.
