Probably a Stupid Question, but I'll ask anyway.
Never liked space saver tyres, so want to get a proper spare in the boot.
Currently have 18" wheels on the car, and just wondered if I needed to get an 18" spare, or would any 75/ZT wheel be O.K.? I would not use it for ages, just wanted confirmation that it would fit and would have the same overall diameter, ie 16" wheels have a "wider" tyre to make up the difference. Thanks again. - Dave - |

Personally, I'd get a spare to match the others. You say you won't use it much, but you really don't know that. Any other wheel from the 75/ZT range could be used, provided the tyre is of a size recommended for the rim. However, a mixed rim/wheel combination may alter the ride/steering characteristics and you would then have to drive as if you had a spacesaver fitted anyway (speed limited to 50mph or whatever).

Probably a stupid question but.......
Why do people ask such stupid questions?
Because people like me don't know the answer and value the response these questions get. Keep asking!!! |

With the space saver, the tool kit and jack fit on top of the wheel in the well and make the space up to the boot floor. If you have an 18" spare it is obviously much wider than the space saver. By good luck or good management the tool and jack assy are a snug fit inside the 18" rim therefore the overall depth is the same and your wheel securing bolt will still fit if you remove the spacer

Calling that silly wheel a 'space saver' is barmy really, 'cos it doesn't save any usable space at all. The overall diameter of the contraption is the same as a conventional wheel and tyre. It's a little thinner granted, but where is the saved space? It was primarily a cost saver and worse still, elicits embarassing giggles from snotty-nosed kids.
