Default correct coolant temp?

My cdt shows an OBD temp reading of between 77 - 79 when the temp gauge is at " 9 o'clock " after about 3 miles.

Is this reading correct or what is the normal operating temp with a fully warmed engine ????

Sounds a bit cool to me, once mine is warmed up it hits around 88 degrees according to the OBD. I queried this a while ago and was told that is pretty much spot on where it should be.

The thermostat is designed to open at about 88C, so I'd regard that as the lower end of the desirable range. The upper end of normal in MGR terms (the gauge) is 115C, but that might be a little high for most people. Diesels are known to be most efficient when running 'hot' (ask the trucker companies).

Try the in-line thermostat mod, use the search function to find some great guides.

Wilbert,

I would give your diesel a bit longer than 3 miles to reach "normal operating temperature". I would monitor the temperature during a variety of journeys and if it stays in the range you've quoted then your thermostat may be faulty.

Bear in mind that the temperature gauge will indicate "normal" over a coolant temperature range of 75 to 115 degrees so it's useless as a warning device.

Simon.

Perfectly normal to show that temp at the 9 oclock position.

It is a CDT and 3 miles is no where near far enough for it to get to full temperature. Watch the OBD until it peaks, then report back.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.
