If a piece of the aux belt got between the crank pulley and the belt the timing will have slipped. The cam marks may line up but you need to check the crank pulley in case it has slipped

My guess and others is that it has

No, as has just been pointed out, that is not necessarily the case!

As for assume, it can be dangerous!
But for a moment let's assume.
1. There is a problem with some belts at least.
2. There is also a starting problem.

The logical assumption is thus to relate the two, not that his is necessarily correct, but that will be the logical assumption, and most likely the correct one.
If this is the case, the easiest way to test the assumption, is to prove it.
IOW prove the timing marks are on or off!

Any other test is just a waste of time, until this is done properly.

As for assume, loosely translated:

ASS U ME (or fool made of you and me!)

Default Re belts

I take it all back. spent this afternoon crawling around under the car and....cam pulleys line up, crank does not, about 1/4 turn out. So, worst scenario? what damage could have been done to the engine, bent valves, head, pistons?

Don't worry. It is most likely easily fixable.
If you want to make absolutely sure, check with the top cover off the valves, especially to see if all valves come back up fully.

I guess some will not, and they are the ones that will be bent.

Then take the head off, fix the valves, you will likely find they need a good re-grind, and replace the bent ones.
New head gasket after checking all liners.
Follow the instructions, don't move engine ones head is off.

It is not expensive, and not that complicated. And there will be many on here that can do it for you, if that is needed.

But not expensive, so cheer up!

Belt has stripped internally where it goes round the crank pulley, can happen if the pistons suddenly come into contact with the valves.

Have removed the top cover and have turned the engine over and everything seems to be OK. I'll put the accent on 'seems', Cam lobes appear to be pushing tappets down and they return to 'rest'. Have I got away with it or?

You might have. I did on my MGF , although it was not clear until after
i removed the head.
If you think so, time the engine and fit a new belt! If it starts and runs, BINGO!

If not, no trainsmash.

As a quick test you could just retime and turn over by hand if ok then see if it starts, if any damage has been done it's allready happened and it will need stripped anyway

Default belts

Anyone who could do the timing belt? Looks as though it's slightly out of my league spanner wise.

What size spanner do you need?
