It's a while back now but Terry at TS autos fitted viton rings to the intercooler hose (adding a 3rd) after I found a Spanish garage had thrown it back together after fitting a new rad. He (Terry) commented that the intercooler hose, whilst intact, was quite soft, I assumed that it was probably silicone but am now wondering whether that's distorting.

Tony
If its black and soft /rubbery, it will be the original hose which tend to swell and become porous, so worth changing for a modern, shiny silicone version.

The other thing you didn't mention trying, is injector cleaner. Take the fuel filter off, half fill with injector cleaner, refit, start and run the engine for a few seconds, then leave it to work on the injectors over night.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Thanks Harry,

I forget to mention that I did this when I replaced fuel filter and also put Cataclean in a near empty tank before I went for MOT.

You read a lot of threads on this forum that say chuck a can of injector cleaner in the fuel filter..it's my view that this can trash your high pressure pump.

I'm sure there will be a barrage of disagreement with this statement but, I remain to be convinced that this a good practice

Mercedes trained mechanics use this procedure.

I'll be the first to join the barrage of disagreement then Gordon
I think you're talking total tosh
The practice of putting injector cleaner into the fuel tank/filter has been standard practice in the trade and home mechanics for some time and has proven results
If you have access to a T4 why not see for yourself the before and after injector readings

Chris

They might Harry this is what Benz says:

With modern technology they shouldn't be required it might have been different 20 years ago but, just my take on it.

Hi Chris,

To my mind diesel is an oil and as such a lubricant cleaner is cleaner as such may remove lubricants again, will bow to superior knowledge..

Not to distract from the OP's original post and being a wet Sunday here thought perhaps a more positive approach is needed..

Could it be that you have a partial injector blockage think it's called "leaning" can cause increased fuel delivery having the effect of over fueling and creating higher emissions..

Possible solution could be a couple of tanks of Forte however, if it doesn't cure
the problem then could be a partial blockage of an injector filter, poor spray pattern etc. There is from what I've read, possibility of solvent insoluble particles such as sand, rust etc which additives can't dissolve.

Could be a job for a specialist..sure there are some here
