Default Diesel: loss of power, rattles, here are two cures

Just wanted to report a couple of fixes in case they are of use to anyone else.

Car is the 75 CDT auto, bought about a month ago, fixed under warranty.

Engine loses power at high speed and throttle opening

The engine drove fine normally, but at low tank levels it would lose power when caning it. I noticed it when thrashing up a motorway slip road - foot to the floor, engine would suddenly lose power and start surging as it got up to 70. Could be quite dangerous!

Lots of people have reported fuel pump problems causing this. In my case it was two partially blocked in-line fuel filters. The garage found one near the tank, and the other under the bonnet. Replaced both, fault completely fixed. I didn't even know it had these extra fuel filters.

Buzzing/rattling from interior at certain engine speeds (1800rpm)

Sounded like it was coming from somewhere in the passenger side, but I couldn't locate it whilst driving. Many times this is due to the BCU located above the glove box. In my case it was a piece of stiff card inside the roof lining. The garage pushed some foam inside and cured it.

Hope these are of help to others.

The front one is a service item, but where exactly is the one near the tank? Have you a photo?

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

This is more likely to be your lower engine mount. You need to replace it with the red powerflex bush.
A common problem on our diesels.
The foam will not have fixed the vibration but just stopped the noise.
I'll post a link in a minute for the bush.

Ah! That's extremely useful to know. So you're saying that the engine is probably vibrating more than it should, hence the vibes?

I'll order a new bush today.

Thanks very much for this tip - much appreciated.

I'll ask the garage where it is, and if I can photograph it I will do.
