I took apart the front bank and the gasket at the front on the exhaust side had blown apart thus allowing coolant into the cylinder.
Putting a straight edge on the head also showed a slight warp corresponding with the same area as the gasket failure.
There did not appear to be any cracks in the head, however only a pressure test would confirm.
I decided to sell the car on rather than repair and it sold in 5 minutes, the new owner has said that he has a good engine to replace it with so hopefully a happy ending.
