I didn't have poor startups when the catalyst was broken. I don't think your poor starting issue is related to the catalyst. I believe the lambda sensors are not incorporated into the control system until everything's running and fully warmed up. Have you eliminated inlet manifold coolant leakage?

I had the inlet manifold gasket replaced in August. I don't expect it to be faulty this soon.

I called the garage this afternoon to find out if they had found anything. They wanted to keep her one night to see if the car also would have starting problems in the morning (cold). They also mentioned the catalyst might be part of the starting issues, so they wanted to replace it. I told them not to, however, since it is a very expensive job again. I might want to do this myself in a couple of months when I've replenished the resources.
Question remains: how long can I drive it with a potentially damaged catalyst? Any ideas?

Thumbs up

Just had a call from the garage; they said the car is ready. It was the camshaft sensor, like you said Glenn. So thanks for that .
Let's hope all I'll be posting for a while will be replies or minor questions.
