Your fix was not purist, but it was not a bodge as it worked and will continue to, this is not a bodge because it works and continues to on many cars over a long period of time...

Yeah well, I have just replaced the "bodge" on mine with the shiny inline lump, because the "bodge" had already failed.

I'm still debating which way to go with this and have to say the 'shiny' way is attractive even if a lot more expensive.

Something being a 'bodge' is someone's opinion - fitting an inline thermostat has been proven as a worthwhile cost-effective way to fix a common problem.

Just the same as soldering the under-seat connectors, using silicone to re-seal rear light clusters and fitting HID headlights to halogen projector units, some will always feel the inline thermostat is a bodge, and they're entitled to their opinion.

If the inline modification didn't exist, I'd bet less than 10% of people with an early-opening thermostat would do the proper job when they got a quote for the work - it's not a simple job.

Just reading up getting ready for the inline thermostat swap and when searching for info on the best bleeding sequence it seems that its not as straightforward for some people and others manage no problems. Whats the best and easiest sequence using the bleed screw at the curly hose where the fbh should be next to the battery?

Default Inline thermostat

Put in the inline thermostat, it worked for the 1st trip with 9pm reading on the gauge. Gradually over a week the gauge went back to the starting block at 6.30pm. Any suggestions? Is it a faulty inline thermostat do you think?

HI Paul.
It could be a faulty stat, what make was it, some have a jiggle pin which you do not want as they let water past the engine then takes longer to get up to temp, is your bottom hose hot when you have had a 5 miles run check it, was all the air got out even though these diesels tend to sort them selves out over time.

Just a little idea.
Maybe we're going about this the wrong way, looking for a cause of the thermostat failure.
Maybe the cause of the thermostat failure is extreme COLD, when the engine is not running, and the car is sitting in sub-zero temperatures ?
Any thoughts ?

What ever make of vehicle, I've found the failure rate on thermostats with the newer style of plastic unit which may have a small housing around them is far greater than a good old fashioned traditional metal thermostat.
The reasons for this may be down to several factors which I've got my own ideas on a few,
But what i'd like to know is how does the way the engine warms up and performs with the in hose thermostat differ from how a fully operational original one? Does the engine warm up any quicker because of the position with the original?
