Hello Amy and to the club.
No, EP (Emergency Programme) is not terminal. It means that the ECU controlling the automatic gearbox thinks that something has failed. Who maintains your car? This could get a bit technical. Simon.

Think you need to beg, borrow or steal an OBD2 reader and get the fault code to see what's gone wrong.

Amy,
This is a tricky one. Is the gearbox obviously malfunctioning; in other words, is it selecting all gears or just some of them? All the suggestions so far are good ones. Some club members have the official MG Rover diagnostic equipment which you'll hear refered to as 'T4'. But this won't be a magic cure, it will just provide another bit of information to consider. Disconnecting the battery, waiting for half an hour, and reconnecting it is worth trying. If you have satellite navigation though you must wait for the red LED on the disc drive to extinguish before disconnecting the battery. Also check that the 'plenum chamber' (the area between the engine compartment and the cabin bulkhead) isn't flooded due to a blocked rainwater drain tube. This is very common and affects the car's main ECU which is mounted there. A forum search will tell you more. Only if it's leaking out (any dripping onto the road?) or if the fluid has been changed by a garage recently and they've underfilled it. Try the suggestions above first. Simon.

As the man said get an ODB reader from someone or ebay.
It sounds like the car is in some sort of 'limp home mode' as they say. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of the KV6's engine management system might be along to give more insight. Could be something as simple as a sensor needing replacement hopefully. But, until you get the fault code read out, you don't have a good place to start. |
